MERCER LAKE, N.J. - Syracuse women's rowing won two silver medals and three bronze medals while finishing third overall at the 2013 BIG EAST Championship on Sunday at Mercer Lake, N.J. The Orange took second in the varsity eight and finished just one point behind Louisville for second place, while Notre Dame won its 10th straight conference title.
Joining the V8 as silver medal winners was the Orange third varsity eight. SU's second varsity eight, first varsity four and second varsity four all won bronze medals as all five SU crews finished on the podium.
It was the second team podium finish in a row for the Orange under head coach Justin Moore in his three years at the helm of the SU program. SU finished second last season after placing fourth in 2011.
The Orange varsity eight recorded the second-best time in the morning time trial, posting a 6:27.628. Eleventh-ranked Notre Dame had the top time of 6:25.026, while No. 18 Louisville was third in 6:28.197. Georgetown and Rutgers finished fourth and fifth, respectively, rounding out the field for the grand final.
In the grand final, the top three finished in the same order, with the Orange reducing its gap from 2.6 seconds to just under 1.8 seconds. The Fighting Irish won gold in a time of 6:49.656, Syracuse won silver in 6:51.418 and Louisville took bronze in 6:57.592. Rutgers snuck ahead of Georgetown for fourth place, swapping spots from the morning time trial.
"The varsity represented our program as well as any boat in my tenure has," Moore said. "They executed their race plan. They were bold and didn't panic when Louisville took the early lead. They dropped the hammer with 500 meters to go, rowed through Louisville and were moving on Notre Dame."
SU's V8 was comprised of Kristina Herb (coxswain), Natalie Mastracci (stroke), Carmen Failla (7), Maggie McCrudden (6), Anna Kaszyki (5), Rebecca Soja (4), Amy Ludovici (3), Miranda Williams (2) and Emma Basher (bow).
Mastracci was named All-BIG EAST First Team. Fellow senior rower Failla and Herb were named All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Syracuse second varsity won the bronze medal in its grand final in a time of 7:10.319, just getting edged by Louisville (7:09.764) at the line for silver after Notre Dame won gold in 7:04.071. The Orange had the second-best time in the morning time trial (6:46.430), behind the Fighting Irish (6:39.689) and just ahead of the Cardinals (6:46.896).
"Our JV displayed courage, but they need to learn how to race a little bit better," Moore said. "The training is there. As we transition to the ACC, getting more high-quality racing throughout the season is a top priority of ours."
In the first varsity four, the defending conference champion Orange placed third in a time 8:00.582. Notre Dame won in 7:47.563 and Louisville took silver in 8:00.582. SU had recorded the second-best time in the morning time trial, behind Notre Dame and ahead of Louisville.
SU put in another silver medal-winning performance in the third varsity eight. The Orange crossed in 7:28.279, behind Notre Dame's winning time of 7:18.864 and ahead of Louisville's bronze-winning performance of 7:31.031. The order of finish mirrored that of the morning time trial.
Louisville won the only gold medal of the day that did not go to the Irish, winning the second varsity four in 7:55.965, while Notre Dame took silver in 7:58.314 and Syracuse won bronze in 8:12.867.
