Syracuse standout, All-American and 1987 Heisman Trophy runner up Don McPherson will be honored along with Vice President Joe Biden -- a Syracuse law school graduate -- among others by Vital Voices as leading men combating violence against women on Wednesday.
McPherson, who is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, quarterbacked the Orange to an undefeated season in 1987 and earned the Davey O'Brien and Johnny Unitas Awards for the nation's top quarterback while at Syracuse.
After his playing career concluded, McPherson has worked as an advocate for the prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence, conducting workshops and lectures for more than 250 college campuses and community and sports organizations.
He has twice testified before Congress and has worked closely with the U.S. Departments of Education and Defense on issues of sexual violence in education and the military.
Vital Voices Global Partnership is an organization founded in 1997 by Hillary Clinton that identifies, invests in and brings visibility to the remarkable women around the world. It presents this award which recognizes men who have shown courage and compassion in advocating on behalf of women and girls everywhere.
The event takes place in conjunction with International Human Rights Day (December 10) in New York City.
