Lacrosse documentary features many with Syracuse ties
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Prior to the Syracuse-Notre Dame men's lacrosse game, the documentary "America's First Sport" will make its national premiere on ESPNU. The hour-long look at the history of lacrosse is scheduled to air at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29 leading up to the noon faceoff between the Orange and Irish at the Carrier Dome.
"America's First Sport" was written, directed and produced by Dennis Deniger, a professor of practice in Syracuse University's David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Narrated by Mike Tirico, the film features interviews with several of the sport's most prominent figures including: Syracuse coaches John Desko and Gary Gait, former Orange head coach Roy Simmons Jr., ESPN analyst Quint Kessenich, as well as current Syracuse stars Derek Maltz, Alyssa Murray and Trenna Hill.
The documentary follows the evolution of lacrosse from a Native American stick-and-ball game to its current place as one of America's fastest growing sports. Research was conducted by students in Deniger's History of Sport class during the 2012-13 academic year and the film is the product of their work.
