SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse senior Alyssa Murray and sophomore Kayla Treanor are two of the four nominees for the Honda Sports Award for women's lacrosse. The list of nominees was announced on Thursday, May 29 by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).
The Honda Sports Award is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2014 Honda Cup. The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The nominees also include Taylor Cummings from Maryland and Shannon Gilroy from Florida.
Murray is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award for the second consecutive year. She finished second in the nation in scoring with 110 points and fifth in assists (45) in 2014. Murray is the first player in school history to record 100 or more points three times in her career. She ranks second on the Orange's all-time scoring list (358 pts.) and is third in career goals (223) and assists (135). Murray is the second Syracuse player to record 300 points, 200 goals and 100 assists in her career. She earned IWLCA first-team All-America honors for the third consecutive year and was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) First Team as well as the ACC and NCAA All-Tournament teams.
Treanor led the nation in scoring with 117 points, which is the highest total for a sophomore in school history. She set the single-season record for goals with 79, which ranked second in the country. Treanor earned IWLCA All-America First Team accolades for the second consecutive year. The Tewaaraton Award finalist ranks seventh on the school's career scoring list (209 pts.) and is sixth in career goals (148) and is tied for eighth in career assists (61).
The Honda Sports award winner for lacrosse will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
