Five Named to All-ACC Academic Men's Lacrosse Team

Macartney, Maltz, Mullins, Rice and Ward recognized for academic achievement
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five members of the SU men's lacrosse squad have been named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Men's Lacrosse Team. Redshirt junior Peter Macartney, redshirt sophomore Brandon Mullins, junior Kevin Rice and seniors Derek Maltz and Billy Ward were picked to the 32-player team announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Tuesday, June 24.

The Orange's top long-stick midfielder, Macartney led all SU non-faceoff specialists with 41 grounds balls. He also recorded nine caused turnovers.

Maltz spent his final season splitting time between attack and the second midfield unit. He tallied 14 goals and dished out nine assists.

Mullins started every game on close defense and earned USILA Second Team All-America honors last month. He collected 36 ground balls, while forcing 17 caused turnovers. Mullins also built a reputation of was of the country's top cover men, routinely marking the opposing team's top offensive player.

Rice started all 16 games on attack for the Orange and led the team in points (80) and assists (44). An All-ACC selection and Tewaaraton Award nominee as the nation's top player, Rice tallied at least one point in every game and recorded six games of at least seven points. Like Mullins, Rice was picked to the USILA All-America Second Team in May. Rice also received Capital One Academic All-America Second Team recognition earlier this month.

SU's top scoring midfielder, Ward finished the season with 26 points on 18 goals and eight assists. He registered five multi-goal games in 2014, including hat tricks in wins versus Albany and North Carolina. Last month, Ward became the fifth player in school history to receive USILA Scholar All-America honors.
Duke led all schools with seven players named to the team, including attackman Jordan Wolf who was tabbed the 2014 ACC Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Notre Dame was second with six honorees. North Carolina, Syracuse and Virginia each had five representatives and Maryland had four.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative GPA during his academic career.
