Orange Tops Hofstra, Le Moyne in Scrimmages

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The fourth-ranked Orange men's lacrosse team posted a pair of scrimmage wins on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Ensley Athletic Center. Syracuse knocked off Hofstra, 18-8, and defeated Division II powerhouse Le Moyne, 10-9.

The Hofstra exhibition featured three regulation quarters and a fourth 15-minute quarter of running time. The Le Moyne scrimmage consisted of three regulation quarters.

The attack trio of seniors Kevin Rice, Randy Staats and redshirt junior Dylan Donahue put on an impressive scoring display, combining for 18 points versus Hofstra. The threesome then propelled the Orange to a 6-0 first-quarter advantage against Le Moyne, before handing the reins over to the reserves for the last two periods.

Rice finished the day with 11 points (9 goals, 2 assists), including a team-high seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) against the Pride. He led the Orange with four goals in the opening quarter of the Le Moyne game.

Staats had two goals and seven assists in the two contests. He scored twice and passed out four assists against Hofstra, and tallied a team-best three assists versus Le Moyne. Donahue notched seven points on the day, including five (3 goals, 2 assists) in the Hofstra game.

In SU's first scrimmage, Hofstra led 1-0 less than 30 seconds into the contest on a goal by Dylan Alderman. But it was all Syracuse after that. The Orange scored eight straight goals, including three by Rice, to claim an 8-1 lead with 10:48 left in the second quarter.

The Pride stopped the bleeding briefly on an unassisted goal by Mike Malave at the 8:20 mark, but Syracuse continued to pour it on and took a 12-4 advantage into the break.

Rice and Derek DeJoe each scored once in the third quarter, and the Orange opened the fourth period with three consecutive goals to go up 17-5.

Hofstra outscored Syracuse 3-1 over the last 7:12, including consecutive unassisted goals by Tim Golden and Cole Considine, to produce the 18-8 final.

Orange goalies Bobby Wardwell and Warren Hill each played a half. Â Wardwell started and made four saves in the first two periods. Hill totaled two saves in the second half.

Syracuse won 15-of-28 (.536) faceoffs, including 13-of-17 (.765) in the first half. Sophomore Ben Williams won 11 of his 16 draws, including six in a row to end the first quarter and help key the Orange's early offensive surge.

For Hofstra, Malave led the way with three points (1 goal, 2 assists). Chris Selva started for the Pride in the cage and was credited with five saves. Jack Concannon played the second half between the pipes and stopped eight shots.

Against Le Moyne, Syracuse led 6-0 after the first quarter. Rice tallied three straight goals in the period, including two off feeds from Staats.
