'Cuse and Cavaliers meet for first time as conference foes

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For the second straight game, the Orange football team (3-2, 1-0 ACC) will play on the road as it takes on Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia (1-4, 0-1 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Networks and Tom Werme (pbp), Ovie Mughelli (analyst), and Niki Noto (sideline) will be on the call.
In its last outing, Syracuse lost at USF, 45-24, on Oct. 10. Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey returned from injury, passing for a career-best 232 yards and two touchdowns. Dungey also ran for a score.
Virginia also lost its most recent game, dropping a 26-19 decision to Pittsburgh. Junior quarterback Matt Johns eclipsed the 200-yard passing mark for the fourth time in 2015 against the Panthers. Johns is averaging 239.8 passing yards per contest, which ranks second in the ACC.
CONFERENCE ROAD OPENER
Saturday's game against the Cavaliers marks Syracuse's first ACC road contest. Since joining the league in 2013, Syracuse is 2-0 in conference road openers. Last season, Syracuse scored 30 unanswered points and defeated Wake Forest, 30-7, in its first road conference game of the season. AJ Long threw for 171 yards and rushed for a touchdown to become the first SU true freshman quarterback to lead the Orange to victory in his first game as a starter.
In its inaugural ACC campaign, the Orange scored two late touchdowns to pull away from NC State, defeating the Wolfpack 24-10 in front of 56,639 at Carter-Finley Stadium on Oct. 11, 2013. The victory marked the team's first conference win as a member of the ACC. Syracuse rushed for a season-high 362 yards in the contest and averaged 9.1 yards per rush.
LACROSSE KINGSÂ
Syracuse and Virginia may have only met four times previously in football, but they have a storied series history in men's lacrosse. The two schools have met 31 times, with the Cavaliers owning a slight edge in the series, 16-15. The two programs have combined for 16 national championships and 26 NCAA Tournament championship game appearances. The Orange last won the title in 2009, while the Cavaliers took home the top prize most recently in 2011.
SEEING RED
The Syracuse offense has been efficient in the red zone this season. SU has scored on 15 of its 16 red-zone opportunities. After five games, the team leads the ACC and ranks 15th nationally in that category (.938). On the year, the club has recorded six points in nine of its 16 red-zone trips. Nine of the Orange's 16 offensive touchdowns have come from inside the opponents' 20-yard line.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia has lost two in a row after posting its first win of 2015 against William & Mary on Sept. 19. Last time out, the Cavaliers lost to Coastal Division opponent Pittsburgh, 26-19, in its ACC opener.
Virginia possesses one of the top passing offenses in the league. The Cavaliers average 246.4 yards through the air per game. The team ranks fourth in the ACC and 46th in the country in passing offense. Junior quarterback Matt Johns has started all five games for Virginia. Johns ranks second in the ACC and 37th nationally in passing yards per game, averaging 239.8 yards per contest.
Senior wide receiver Canaan Severin is the Cavaliers' top threat on the outside. Severin has hauled in 26 passes for 348 yards. He ranks third in the conference in receiving yards and fourth in receiving yards per game (69.6) and receptions per game (5.2).
Sophomore linebacker Micah Kiser has been all over the field. Kiser leads the ACC in solo tackles (6.8) and total tackles (10.0) per game. He is second in the league behind SU's Ron Thompson in sacks per contest (0.90).
THE VIRGINIA SERIES
Syracuse and Virginia have played four times with each side winning twice. The Orange won the first two meetings in the series, defeating Virginia in 1975 and 1977. In the first meeting between the two schools, the Orange defeated the Cavaliers at Scott Stadium, 37-0. It marks the largest margin of victory in the series. UVa has had its say of late, winning the last two contests in 2004 and 2005.
