Men Repeat as Wisconsin Invite Champs, Women Place 11th

MADISON, Wis. – Syracuse men's cross country placed three runners in the top six to lead the way its second-straight Wisconsin Adidas Invitational title on Friday. The Orange women's team improved one spot on last year's finish, taking 11th.
Widely considered to be the nation's most hotly contested regular-season meet, the Orange are the only program on either the men's or women's side to win the event back-to-back years and have now won the event three times since claiming the title in the inaugural event in 2009. The women's program also has a Wisconsin Adidas Invitational title, winning in 2010.
Justyn Knight (23:35.8) placed second, Martin Hehir (23:36.9) was fourth and Colin Bennie (23:38.5) finished sixth as the men's race's lead pack was hued Orange. Syracuse finished with 101 points, easily beating No. 9 BYU (186) and No. 8 Michigan (218), No. 7 Virginia (238) and No. 5 Iona (268), who rounded out the top-five respectively, in a race that included 17 ranked teams on the men's side, including six of the top 10 teams.
Joel Hubbard also ran a strong race for the men, taking 28th overall after winning the 'B' race at the event last season, with Dan Lennon rounding out the 'Cuse scoring in 61st place.
Margo Malone (20:04.5) finished 17th in the women's race to lead an Orange squad that finished with 282 points, good for 11th place overall, one sport better than last year's finish and tying their 2013 finish.
Malone was 20 seconds faster than last year when she placed 23rd on the same course. It's the 13th time in her career she has been the Orange's top finisher. She was followed cloesly by Sydney Leiher, who took 44th. Shaylyn Tuite (96th), Maura Linde (103) and Cassia Hameline (122) rounded out the scoring for the No. 15 'Cuse squad.
No. 1 New Mexico won the women's race with 38 points, while Syracuse was the third-best ACC team of the seven that competed, behind just Virginia and NC State, who took third and fourth respectively.
In the ensuing open races, the Syracuse men also turned in a strong showing, taking second as a team. All-five Syracuse men which competed finished in the top-20, led by Joe Kush (3) and TJ Hornberger (4) who turned in top-five performances.
Only four women competed in the women's open race, with Karina Ernst taking 19th to lead the way.
Syracuse will next look to defend its ACC Championship on Oct. 30, in Talahassee, Fla.
