SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse University football team (3-3, 1-1 ACC) will play its only home contest in the month of October when it hosts No. 25 Pittsburgh (5-1, 3-0 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 24 during Orange Central/Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
Dunkin' Donuts is week's game sponsor. Tickets start at $30 and they are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) for all home games can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and Anish Shroff (pbp) and Ahmad Brooks (analyst) will be on the call.
In its last outing, Syracuse lost in triple overtime, 44-38, at Virginia on Oct. 17. Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey accounted for 235 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in the contest.
Pittsburgh defeated Georgia Tech, 31-28, in its game on Oct. 17. Junior kicker Chris Blewitt booted a 56-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining to secure the third straight victory for the Panthers.
EASTERN FOOTBALL HEAVYWEIGHTS
Syracuse and Pittsburgh both rank among the top 20 FBS programs in all-time wins. Pittsburgh ranks 18th with 701 victories, while Syracuse is in 19th place with 700 wins. Eleven Orange wins by were vacated by the NCAA from 2004-06.
Presented every year since 1936, the Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy recognizes the best FBS team in the Northeast. SU has claimed the trophy six times, most recently in 1992, which is tied with Pittsburgh for third on the list behind Penn State (29) and Army (7).
HEAD COACH CONNECTION
Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer and Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi are good friends, having coached together for six seasons at Rhode Island and Northern Illinois. They will meet for the first time on opposing sidelines as head coaches on Saturday afternoon.
From 1993-95, Shafer and Narduzzi were a part of the Rhode Island coaching staff. Shafer coached the secondary, while Narduzzi served as the linebackers coach. In 1995, they helped the Rams to a New England Division title.
The two reconnected at Northern Illinois from 2000-02. Shafer served as the defensive coordinator, while Narduzzi coached the linebackers. In 2002, their defensive unit led the MAC in every defensive category.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The Orange are certainly a young bunch in 2015. At Virginia, 16 of its 22 starters were underclassmen and 25 underclassmen have logged at least one start this season.
Syracuse has run for 1,010 yards thus far this season. Underclassmen have accounted for 979 of those yards (96.9 percent), as senior punter Riley Dixon has 29 rushing yards and senior quarterback Terrel Hunt picked up two yards on the ground before being hurt. In addition, 715 yards of those yards (70.8 percent) have come from players in their first or second years in the program.
True freshmen have seen plenty of action, especially on offense. Through six games, SU has accumulated 2,042 yards of total offense. True freshmen have accounted for 1,428 of those yards (69.9 percent).
DYNAMIC DUNGEY
Through six games, Eric Dungey ranks among the best freshmen quarterbacks in the country and Syracuse football history. With 24 more passing yards, he will pass Todd Norley for fifth place on the Syracuse freshmen single-season passing yards list. Norley threw for 833 yards as a rookie in 1982. Donovan McNabb holds the record with 1,991 passing yards in 1995.
Dungey currently leads all freshmen, true and redshirt, in the nation in passing efficiency (167.1) and he is the only rookie in the top 25. Dungey ranks second in the country in yards per completion (13.97) and points responsible for per game (14.4), among freshmen. In both of those categories, he is the top true freshman nationally.
Lastly, Dungey ranks fourth in the country in completion percentage (.630) among rookies and tops among true freshmen.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Since losing at Iowa on Sept. 19, Pittsburgh has won each of its last three games. In its latest contest, Pittsburgh defeated Georgia Tech, 31-28, on a 56-yard field goal from junior kicker Chris Blewitt with 1:11 remaining in regulation.
Pittsburgh has made it quite stressful for opposing quarterbacks thus far. The Panthers lead the ACC and rank third nationally in sacks per game, averaging 3.67 per contest.
Head coach Pat Narduzzi is in his first year at the helm of the Panthers' program. Prior to Pittsburgh, Narduzzi served as the defensive coordinator at Michigan State from 2007-14.
Junior Tyler Boyd is arguably one of the top wide receivers nationally, coming off an All-America season in 2014. Boyd currently leads the ACC in receiving yards per game (79.2) and receptions per contest (8.2).
THE PITTSBURGH SERIES
Syracuse and Pittsburgh have met exactly 70 times. Pittsburgh holds a slight advantage in the all-time series with a 36-31-3 overall mark against the Orange.
At the conclusion of Saturday's game, the two teams will have played 71 games. That marks Syracuse's second-longest series in the 126-year history of the program. Syracuse and Penn State have played one another on 73 occasions.
Syracuse and Pittsburgh have met every season since 1955. Pittsburgh has had its say lately in the series, winning nine of the past 10 matchups.
