SYRACUSE, N.Y.- After trailing 32-30 in the second half, Syracuse (8-3) outscored Cornell (5-5), 37-14 and emerged with a 67-46 victory at the Carrier Dome.
One of those 11-0 runs came immediately after Cornell's Robert Hatter knocked down a free throw to give the Big Red its last lead of the game at 32-30. It took exactly 14 seconds for the Orange to retake its lead, as graduate student Trevor Cooney connected for his first trifecta of the contest.
The three from Cooney sparked an 11-0 run that put Syracuse up 41-32 at the first media timeout in the second half. On the run, five different Orange players scored, conveying a spread-out offense from Syracuse.
"We have a bunch of guys that can fill it up on the offensive end," freshman Malachi Richardson said. "We have a bunch of scorers between me, Mike [Gbinije], Trevor [Cooney], Tyler Lydon – Tyler Roberson can get it done on the offensive end. DaJuan Coleman had a great game too."
The players mentioned above from Richardson accumulated 65 of the 67 points scored by Syracuse, including 35 points in the second half. The team started to click by getting to the basket and hauling in rebounds for second-chance opportunities, paving the way to the 21-point victory.
Throughout the span of the game, Syracuse outrebounded Cornell 48-27, including a 17-9 edge off the offensive glass. The Orange scored 34 points in the paint and registered 17 points coming off second-chance opportunities.
"I think as a team we were active and locked in defensively," junior Tyler Roberson said. "Good things happened off that, we started running. I think they were getting tired and annoyed that they weren't scoring off of our defense."
Roberson finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, ensuing as the difference-maker down low for the Orange. With a 44-36 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the game, Syracuse went on its second 11-0 run that included two dunks on the interior from Roberson. With a 55-36 lead with only seven minutes to go, Cornell's offense eventually started to click up until the 3:35 mark, but then the Big Red did not register a field goal for the remainder of the contest.
