Eight different players score for Syracuse as it improves to 3-0.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 3/3 Syracuse used a 9-1 scoring run to pull away from Canisius in a 19-7 victory in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, Feb. 15. The offensive outburst covered the final 9:39 of the first half and the first 5:32 of the second as the Orange broke open what was a one-goal game and defeated the Golden Griffins for the second consecutive contest.
Â
Syracuse (3-0) once again featured a balanced scoring attack as nine different players recorded goals. Junior Kayla Treanor tallied a team-best five points on four goals and an assist, while senior Kailah Kempney and freshman Riley Donahue tallied three goals apiece. On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson recorded a career-high 11 saves.
Â
Treanor scored twice in the first eight minutes to help the Orange to a 5-1 lead before the Golden Griffins (0-2) responded with three consecutive goals to cut the lead to 5-4 with 10:43 remaining in the first half. Syracuse's offense took over less than a minute later. Kempney, junior Kelly Cross and Donahue each scored a goal to put the Orange up 8-4. After Canisius' Lauren Smolensky briefly halted the run, Syracuse tallied the final three goals of the half, including two by junior Halle Majorana, to take an 11-5 halftime lead.
Â
Donahue started the scoring in the second half when she scored on a pass from sophomore Kaeli O'Connor. That was the first of three straight for SU as it extended its advantage to 14-5 with 24:28 remaining. Five different players scored for Syracuse as it ended the game on a 5-2 scoring run for the 19-7 final.
Â
"It's something different this early in the season to play a team back-to-back," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "(Canisius) played us tough in the first half but our players made some adjustments and got the job done. It was a good team effort all around."
Â
Syracuse outshot Canisius, 38-21, and dominated in the draw circle, winning 19-of-28. The Golden Griffins picked up 18 ground balls to 17 for the Orange.
Â
The Orange was scheduled to play Presbyterian in the second game of a doubleheader, but the game was cancelled due to travel issues for the Blue Hose. Syracuse is back in action on Monday, Feb. 23 when it opens ACC play against Virginia.
