The freshmen were two-of-three ‘Cuse players to hit .600 or better on Opening Day
ROSEMONT, Ill. – If you've been around the Syracuse softball team at all, there's no question at all that the coaches and returners have been eager to see this year's freshman class in action. However, even with the deep class, there are two in particular that have stood out since they arrived and opening day was no exception.
Â
It could not have been a more comfortable setting to start your collegiate career for Maddi Doane. It was homecoming, her family was in attendance, she had played in The Dome At Rosemont before and she stated before the game that she knew the opposing pitcher. It soon became evident that she was, in fact, very familiar with her.
Â
Doane tagged Illinois-Chicago for three hits, three runs, two runs batted in, a walk and a stolen base in Syracuse's, 10-1, victory. Out of the leadoff spot, she reached base all four times she stepped up to the plate and contributed to half of Syracuse's offensive output in the game. One of her RBI came off of a triple, splitting left-center.
Â
She then went on to contribute to half of Syracuse's run total in the second game against Miami (OH), going one-for-three with a double bringing in a run and later scoring in the inning. She also reached base on a walk in the game.
Â
Overall, Doane reached base in six of her eight plate appearances and finished leading Syracuse in batting average (.667), hits and at-bats (four-for-six), runs scored (four), RBI (three), extra base hits (a double and a triple), on-base percentage (.750), slugging percentage (1.167) and she recorded the only stolen base of the day.
Â
Sammy Fernandez also lived up to the hype, producing in the nine spot to tie for second on the team with a .600 batting average, three hits and two runs. She also was credited with a RBI and a walk. She finished with a .667 on-base percentage which is the third best percentage for Syracuse.
Â
Fernandez also lived up to the hype defensively and picked up three assists and three putouts in the middle infield. The defensive performance was highlighted by a play where she robbed Illinois-Chicago of a single, leaping into the air to backhand a blooper over her right shoulder.
Â
She finished one-for-two in the win against the Flames with a run, a RBI and a walk and was able to find success against Miami (OH), singling twice in three at-bats and scoring a run.
Â
Together, the duo recorded hits in 7-of-11 at-bats (.636), scored six of Syracuse's 14 runs, knocked in 4-of-12 runs batted in and reached base in 10-of-14 plate appearances (.714).
 Â
The Orange is back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. EST against Samford and will wrap up Saturday with a matchup with Central Michigan at 5:30 p.m. EST.
