Three Syracuse University student-athletes were among 53 honorees from across the Atlantic Coast Conference to be recognized Wednesday at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club and presented by ESPN at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Â
Tennis senior Komal Safdar was awarded the Jim and Pat Thacker award, which rewards student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding performance both in athletic competition and in the classroom and intend to further their education through postgraduate studies at an ACC Institution.
Safdar, who majors in biochemistry and psychology, is also the president of the Syracuse student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC). A member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each semester on campus, Safdar is also a three-time member of a conference all-academic team (2014 ACC, 2012 and 2013 BIG EAST).
Â
In addition to Safdar, football student-athletes Cameron Lynch and Sam Rodgers were honored with postgraduate scholarships of $5,000 toward their graduate educations
Â
Rodgers, who was previously a CoSida Academic All-America, served as a captain this season and finished his career with the Orange having served as the teams long snapper in every game since his arrival at Syracuse.
A nutrition major, Rodgers was an AFCA Good Works Team honoree this season for his work in the community, which includes a pair of mission trips to Haiti with the group Poverty Resolutions. Rodgers was also named a Remembrance Scholar for this academic year at Syracuse, which is one of the highest awards a student at Syracuse University can receive.
Lynch, an All-ACC Third Team linebacker, was also a team captain for the Orange this season. He led the Orange in tackles (97), tackles for loss (12.0) and sacks (7.0), with his 97 tackles ranking as a career-high. He also led 'Cuse in tackles seven different times this season.
Lynch also produced and starred in the Cuse.com weekly series "Cam's Cam" which provided an in-depth look at different members of the football team each week.
Â
The trio joins Adrian Chambers, Laura Hahnefeldt and Sarah Pagano, who earned ACC postgraduate scholarships last year in Syracuse's inaugural season in the conference.
