CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Kayla Treanor scored in the second overtime period to give No. 7/7 Syracuse a 14-13 victory against No. 4/3 Boston College in the quarterfinals of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Orange advances to the semifinals where it will play No. 3/4 Duke on Friday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
Â
A tight second half featured four ties in the final 18:24 of regulation. The Orange (12-6) led, 8-5, at halftime, but Boston College (14-3) outscored Syracuse, 4-1, in the first 12 minutes of the second half to tie the score at 10-10. After a Syracuse timeout, Treanor scored a wrap-around goal to put the Orange back on top, 11-10.
Â
Kenzi Kent answered for the Eagles with one of her five goals to again even the score. The teams continued to trade goals and Kent's goal at the 4:51 mark tied the score at 13-13. Boston College won the ensuing draw and held the ball for a final shot. Syracuse goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson  stopped Caroline Margolis' potential game winner with six seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
Â
The Eagles won the draw to start the first three-minute overtime session, but Richardson was again up to the challenge and stopped Sarah Mannelly's shot to keep the game tied. Boston College won its third straight draw to start the second three-minute extra session, but Covie Stanwick turned the ball over and senior Mallory Vehar picked up the ground ball to give Syracuse possession with 16 seconds remaining. The Orange couldn't get off a shot sending the game into a second sudden-victory overtime period.
Â
Vehar won the draw and Syracuse called timeout. The Orange worked the ball into its offensive zone and Treanor netted the game winner when she came around the back of the net on the right side and put her shot past Eagles' goalkeeper Zoe Ochoa to give Syracuse a 14-13 victory.
Â
"We've been in this situation so many times this year," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait of the Orange's ninth one-goal game of the season. "I think tonight's result is a direct result of being here before. No panic on the field. (If) they want the last shot, we're going to play great defense and not let them get a good last shot. That's what we did three times in a row until we got our chance."
Â
Syracuse held Boston College without a goal for the first 31:29 as it jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Junior Erica Bodt started the scoring on an assist from senior Kailah Kempney at the 28:47 mark. Junior Taylor Gait and junior Halle Majorana tallied unassisted goals, causing Boston College to call timeout. Richardson made a save on Mannelly's free position attempt to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard before junior Lisa Rogers and senior Devon Collins tallied goals to extend Syracuse's lead to five.
Â
Stanwick tallied Boston College's first goal at the 13:31 mark, sparking the Eagles on a 4-1 scoring run to cut Syracuse's lead to 6-4 with 7:44 remaining in the half. Freshman Riley Donahue converted a free position attempt to halt Boston College's scoring streak and Treanor's goal on an assist from junior Brenna Rainone gave the Orange an 8-5 lead. Boston College had the final possession of the half, but its shot bounced off the crossbar.
Â
Treanor finished with five points (3g, 2a) and moved into fourth place on Syracuse's all-time scoring list with 282 points. Majorana also had five points (4g, 1a), while Rogers recorded her first career hat trick. Richardson recorded 11 saves, marking the sixth time this season she has reached double figures in saves.
