The Syracuse softball coaching staff is complete with the appointment of head coach Mike Bosch and three-time All-American Alisa Goler and NFCA All-Region selection Kristyn Sandberg as assistant coaches. Bosch, who has been the interim head coach of the program since June 2015, was an assistant at Syracuse for two NCAA Tournament teams and had a successful 14-year stint as the head coach at Iowa Lakes Community College. Graduates of the University of Georgia, Goler and Sandberg both played professionally in the National Pro Fastpitch League and earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Â
As the third head coach in the history of the Orange program, Bosch has a wealth of familiarity and knowledge of the program having served as an assistant coach under former head coach Leigh Ross for three years (2010-12 and 2014-15).
Â
"We have a tremendous opportunity for Syracuse to have a great softball tradition because of the University and all of the people on our staff," Bosch said. "We are also fortunate to have such accomplished coaches with national championship caliber teams in our department. I appreciate the opportunity that Athletics Director Mark Coyle has given me to lead this program. I am also grateful for the opportunity Leigh Ross gave me when she hired me to be part of her staff.
Â
"We will have a team oriented concept focused on making sure we are one. We will push our teammates while pushing ourselves because together we will be stronger. We will develop the student-athletes on and off the field by communicating all aspects and responsibilities of being a student and an athlete."
Â
During the 2014-15 season at Syracuse, Bosch was primarily responsible for recruiting and serving as the pitching coach. He was also integral in the handling of day-to-day operations, while also working with infield, outfield and hitting. He mentored current junior pitcher Jocelyn Cater, who ranked in the top 25 nationally in strikeouts.
Â
In 2011, Bosch was part of a BIG EAST champion Syracuse squad that broke program single-season records for wins, strikeouts, shutouts, opponent batting average and earned run average. He coached Orange All-American Jenna Caira, who earned 2011 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and ECAC Pitcher of the Year honors. Syracuse advanced to the NCAA Regionals and the Orange coaching staff was named the NFCA Great Lakes region Coaching Staff of the Year. The Orange returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
Â
Prior to his return in 2014, Bosch was the National Softball Director for Frozen Ropes Inc. in Chester, N.Y. from 2012 to 2013.
Â
As the head coach at Iowa Lakes Community College from 1997 to 2010, Bosch complied a record of 525-236-2 and earned the NFCA Midwest Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006 and 2010. During his tenure, he developed 28 All-Americans and 81 All-Region selections.
Â
In 2008, Bosch led the Lakers to Region XI Championships in 2008 and 2010 and the 2009 squad played for the Region XI title. His 2008 and 2010 teams earned invitations to the NJCAA National Championship, finishing fifth and third, respectively.
Â
Bosch earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics education from Southwest State University in 1990 and completed his master's degree in mathematics from Mankato State University in 1997. He served as a mathematics professor at Iowa Lakes Community College from 1996-2010 and from 2013-2014.
