SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After spirited competition at several positions during preseason camp, Syracuse's lineup for the season opener against Rhode Island has come into focus.
Â
Orange head coach Scott Shafer released the team's Week 1 depth chart on Saturday, Aug. 29. The two-deep includes 11 players who started at least six games in 2014, and features 24 players who have made at least one start during their careers.
Depth Chart Notes
• LT Ivan Foy (23), LG Nick Robinson (21), C Rob Trudo (33) and RT Omari Palmer (9) have combined for 86 career starts. The only member of the Orange's front five without starting experience is Seamus Shanley who gets the nod at right guard.
• Trudo is the Orange's most experienced player on either side of the ball with 33 career starts under his belt.
• Six true freshmen made the two-deep. Rookie Eric Dungey will share the backup quarterback duties with sophomore Austin Wilson. Cody Conway is listed as the second-string left tackle behind Foy. On defense, DE Qaadir Sheppard, NT Steven Clark, SS Kielan Whitner each earned reserve roles, and Matt Keller is locked in a battle with senior Keith Mitsuuchi for the long-snapping job.
• In addition to the freshmen, one other Orange newcomer is featured on the depth chart – junior Ted Taylor. The Dodge City Community College (Kan.) product is the backup to Parris Bennett at strong-side linebacker.
• LB Marqez Hodge and DE Ron Thompson own the most career starts on defense with 12 apiece.
• The Orange features two of the most reliable specialists in the ACC in P Riley Dixon and K Cole Murphy. Dixon was an All-ACC Honorable Mention choice in 2014 and ranks fourth in team history with a career punting average of 42.2 yards per kick. Murphy was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist last season after connecting on 13-of-16 field goals, including a pair of 50-yarders.
• WR Brisly Estime and HB Ervin Philips will handle return duties in the kicking game. Estime battled injuries last season, but averaged 31.5 yards on four punt returns in 2013, including a career-long return of 70 yards in the final minutes of the Texas Bowl against Minnesota to help set up the winning touchdown. Philips served as the Orange's primary kick returner last year, recording 476 yards on 25 runbacks (19.0 avg.).
Syracuse and Rhode Island open the 2015 season on Friday, Sept. 4 with a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Carrier Dome.
