SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University football team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) opens its third season in the Atlantic Coast Conference at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Wake Forest (1-0, 0-0 ACC) at 12:30 p.m. It will be an 'Orange Out' so make sure to wear your orange in support of the team as the 'Cuse gridders look to start the year with back-to-back wins. Individual game tickets are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) for all home games can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network. Tim Brant (pxp), Dave Archer (analyst), and Roddy Jones (sideline) have the call.
Saturday's contest marks the first ACC game of the 2015 season. For Syracuse, it is the team's earliest conference opener since 2005. SU played West Virginia, then a conference foe in the BIG EAST, in its 2005 season opener on Sept. 4, 2005.
In last week's campaign starter, Syracuse stifled Rhode Island, 47-0. The shutout represented the first time SU held its opponent scoreless in an opener since 1997 when it beat Wisconsin, 34-0, in the Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium.
Wake Forest defeated Elon, 41-3, its first game of the 2015. Quarterback John Wolford passed for a career-high 323 yards in the Demon Deacons' victory.
LET'S CELEBRATE 'COACH MAC'
Hall of Fame head coach Dick MacPherson and his family will be honored Saturday on the very field where he worked his craft in the 1980s.
MacPherson provided Orange Nation with countless reasons to smile during his 10-year tenure on the Syracuse sidelines, including the 1987 undefeated regular season and five bowl appearances. At Syracuse, 'Coach Mac' mentored 37 NFL Draft picks and 10 first-team All-Americans.
THE WAKE FOREST SERIES
Syracuse has won three of its four meetings against Wake Forest. All four matchups have come in the past nine seasons, with the first game between the two teams coming in 2006. The Demon Deacons won the first clash, 20-10, but have lost three straight to the Orange.
Syracuse owns a 2-0 record in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome against Wake Forest. The Orange opened the 2011 season with a wild 36-29 victory in overtime against the Demon Deacons. SU's Ryan Nassib and Wake Forest's Tanner Price combined for 467 passing yards.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST WAKE FOREST
Syracuse scored 30 unanswered points and defeated Wake Forest, 30-7, in its first road conference game of the 2014 season. AJ Long threw for 171 yards and rushed for a touchdown to become the first SU true freshman quarterback to lead the Orange to victory in his first game as a starter.
Long completed his first five passes and finished the day 22-for-32 for 171 yards. Long's 22 completions were the most ever for SU true freshman signal caller in one game, eclipsing the previous mark of 18 set by Todd Norley against Maryland in 1982.
Defensively, Syracuse recorded three sacks and forced two turnovers. Both takeaways resulted in scores as defensive ends Robert Welsh (interception return for a touchdown) and Micah Robinson (fumble return for a touchdown) contributed 12 Orange points.
YOUNG GUN
True freshman quarterback Eric Dungey made his collegiate debut on Sept. 4 in the Orange's season opener against Rhode Island. Dungey entered the contest in the first quarter after senior quarterback Terrel Hunt exited due to an injury. Dungey finished the game 10-of-17 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball eight times for 20 yards.
Dungey became the 10th true freshman to take snaps for the Orange since freshmen became eligible in 1972. The Lake Oswego, Ore. native joined AJ Long as the only two Syracuse true freshmen quarterbacks to throw a touchdown pass in their debuts. Dungey connected with sophomore hybrid back Ervin Philips twice for scores.
Dungey's first collegiate pass attempt was certainly a memorable one. He rolled to his right, jumped, and found Philips on a screen pass. Philips took the pass 32 yards for the score.
UP NEXT
