SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University football team (2-0) looks for its first 3-0 start to a season since 1991 when it hosts Central Michigan (1-1) in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 12:30 p.m. It's Youth Day and all kids 12-and-under get in free with a paid adult (up to three per adult ticket). Individual game tickets are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) for all home games can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
The game will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Network. Wes Durham (pxp), James Bates (analyst), and Jenn Hildreth (sidelines) are on the call.
With a victory, the 2015 Orange would become the fifth Syracuse team to start 3-0 in 50 years. In addition, the squad would be the 33rd team in the program's 126-year history to win its first three games.
In its latest contest, Syracuse outscored Wake Forest, 17-0, in the second half en route to a 30-17 victory on Sept. 12. Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey tossed two second-half touchdown passes to guide the Orange back from a 17-13, halftime deficit.
Central Michigan rebounded from a season-opening loss to Oklahoma State, winning 31-10 win against Monmouth on Sept. 12. It marked the first victory in the John Bonamego era. Quarterback Cooper Rush threw for 328 yards and three scores against the Hawks.
FAMILIAR FOE FOR SHAFER
Despite only playing them once as a head coach, Scott Shafer is certainly familiar with Central Michigan. Shafer spent 10 years as an assistant coach in the Mid-American Conference and owns an 8-2 record against the Chippewas (1-0 as a head coach, 7-2 as an assistant coach).
From 1996-2003, Shafer was a member of the Northern Illinois staff, where his teams posted a 6-1 record against Central Michigan. In 2005 and 2006, Shafer and Western Michigan split a pair of games with the Chippewas.
STOPPING THE RUN
The Syracuse rush defense has gotten off to a fantastic start.Through two contests, the Orange has allowed a mere 50 yards on the ground (25.0 per game), which ranks second nationally. Boston College leads the country in rushing defense, allowing 7.0 rushing yards per game.
In its last outing against Wake Forest, the Orange was able to pitch a second-half shutout, largely due to its run defense. After allowing 31 rushing yards in the opening 30 minutes of play, SU limited the Demon Deacons to 15 yards in the second half.
BIG PLAYS THROUGH THE AIRÂ
Syracuse has shown the ability to pick up yards in bunches through the air so far this season. Currently, the Orange ranks first in the Atlantic Coast Conference and fifth in the nation in passing yards per completion, averaging 18.61 yards per catch. The Orange has five pass plays of 20 yards or more in 2015, three of which have gone for touchdowns.
Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey has been the trigger man. Dungey ranks first in the ACC and fourth in the country in yards per completion (18.61). To illustrate, five of his 18 career completions have gone for more than 20 yards. In addition, four of his 18 completions have been touchdown passes.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Quarterback Cooper Rush already ranks as one of the best passers in CMU history. The junior ranks fourth in program history with 6,059 career passing yards. Rush has also tossed 45 touchdown passes, which ranks third in Central Michigan history.Â
Rush's top receiving weapon is Mark Chapman. The sophomore wideout has caught six passes in each of CMU's first two games and ranks 29th in the nation in receptions per game (6.0). Chapman has 133 receiving yards.
Following their season opener, defensive back Kavon Frazier was named the MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded a personal-best 13 tackles. Frazier currently ranks sixth nationally with 8.5 solo tackles per game.
THE CENTRAL MICHIGAN SERIES
Syracuse has played Central Michigan twice in its history. The Orange have scored wins in both contests, beating the Chippewas by a combined score of 87-10.
The two programs met for the first time on Sept. 11, 1999. SU notched a 47-7 victory in the Carrier Dome behind 135 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions from wide receiver Quinton Spotwood.
Last season, the Orange posted a 40-3 win on the road. Quarterback Terrel Hunt rushed for three touchdowns and accounted four total scores in the victory.
