Five Elected Captains
10/12/2016 5:15:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Five members of the Orange were selected to represent the 2017 team as captains. Redshirt seniors Paolo Ciferri, Evan Molloy and Sergio Salcido as well as seniors Scott Firman and Ben Williams will represent Syracuse this season.
The quintet was selected by a team vote, with all-five players serving as first time captains.
Ciferri has played in every game for the past two seasons as one of the team's primary short stick defensive midfielders. He has played in 40 games over the course of his career, causing 11 turnovers and collecting eight ground balls. His eight caused turnovers last season was a career high. He also contributed four assists in 2016, another career best. The Ithaca, N.Y. native has two goals and seven points all-time in his Syracuse career.
Firman has been one of the team's top long stick midfielders since arriving on campus for the 2014 season. He has played in 46 career games and enters the season with 32 career caused turnovers and 66 ground balls. A Fayetteville, N.Y. native, Firman caused a career-best 14 turnovers last season, which was second on the team behind All-American Brandon Mullins' 31.
Molloy earned the starting goalkeeper spot with five games remaining in the regular season last year, finishing the season with a 7-2 record, 80 saves, a .529 save percentage and a 7.99 goals against average. Molloy was just shy of playing enough minutes to qualify for the NCAA ranks, but his goals against average would have ranked eighth nationally if he had. Molloy was also crucial in the team's second-straight ACC title run, being named ACC Tournament MVP for recording career highs in saves against both North Carolina and Duke.
Salcido is one of three returning All-Americans for the Orange this season. A breakout performer in 2016, he finished second on the team with 29 goals and 24 assists for 53 points while starting all-17 games in the Syracuse midfield. Salcido also got hot at the end of the year, averaging over 3.7 points per game over his final-seven games. In addition to his All-America accolades, the Winter Park, Florida native also earned All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament Team accolades last season.
Williams enters his third and final year at Syracuse on pace to shatter the career faceoffs record at Syracuse and coming off a Second Team All-American worthy season last year. The senior has already re-written numerous records at the faceoff X for SU, winning nearly 65 percent of his faceoffs in his career (488-of-753) with two seasons inside the program's top-five for total wins. He also holds two of the best-nine seasons in program history from a win percentage standpoint.
