INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Syracuse has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament for the third consecutive year. The Orange earned the No. 8 seed and a first-round bye in this year's tournament. Syracuse will host the winner of the Dartmouth – St. Francis (Brooklyn) match on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
"I'm very proud of this group," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "Through hard work, commitment and endeavor, the boys deserved to see their name up there (on the bracket). There's nothing better in college athletics than to see your name on the bracket so for our guys to enjoy that is very special. Now it's time to get down to business."
Syracuse is 3-0-3 in its last six matches and enters the NCAA Tournament with an 11-3-4 overall record. The Orange have posted 10 shutouts this season and rank sixth in the nation in goals-against average (0.57) and seventh in shutout percentage (.560). Sophomore Miles Robinson earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award and was voted to the All-ACC First Team. Senior Chris Nanco joined Robinson on the first team, while freshman Mo Adams earned All-ACC Third Team and All-Freshman Team honors.
Tickets for Sunday's game are $8 for adults and $5 for youth ages 18 and under, students with an NCAA school ID and seniors ages 65 and over.
Ivy League champion Dartmouth will host Thursday's match against St. Francis (Brooklyn). The Big Green are 8-4-5 this season. St. Francis (Brooklyn) won the Northeast Conference Tournament and enters Thursday's match with a 12-4-3 record. Syracuse defeated Dartmouth, 2-1, in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 1935. The Orange and Terriers have met seven times, with the Orange holding a slight 3-2-2 advantage in the series. The last meeting between the two schools was during the 1988 season.
The ACC set an NCAA record as nine teams from the conference were selected to this year's tournament, seven of which are among the top 16 seeds. Wake Forest, the ACC Tournament champion, is the No. 2 seed, followed by Clemson at No. 3 and Louisville at No. 4. North Carolina is the No. 9 seed, while Virginia is the 12th seed and Notre Dame the 13th seed. Boston College and Virginia Tech also earned at-large bids. Maryland, which is 18-0-2 this season, is the No. 1 overall seed.
The Orange will make their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth in the last five years. Syracuse is 6-2-2 all-time in tournament play. Last season, the Orange earned a program-best No. 6 seed and advanced to the College Cup for the first time in school history. Syracuse and Clemson played to a 0-0 tie in the national semifinals, but the Tigers won the penalty kick shootout to advance to the national final.
This year's tournament gets underway on Thursday, Nov. 17 with 16 first-round matches, while second-round games are scheduled for Sunday. Third-round games are slated for Nov. 26 or 27, which Syracuse would host if it advances. The quarterfinals will take place Dec. 2 or 3.
The 2016 NCAA College Cup will be held at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas. The national semifinals are slated for Dec. 9 and the championship match will be played on Dec. 11.
