Six score in double-figures for the Orange
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Following an even 20-20 first period, the Syracuse women's basketball team (2-0) responded by outscoring Siena (0-1), 82-45, in the final three quarters en route to a 102-65 victory on Monday night in the Carrier Dome.Â
"A great game for our kids," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "We got our pace going again and that's all it's really about - getting up and down the floor and being aggressive. I'm really happy with our effort and tempo of the game. To have our starters score 83 points, that's an amazing deal for us. We need our seniors to play hard and be aggressive and they're carrying us right now. They had a monster night. I'm very happy with everything we're doing right now and we want to continue to put these runs together and put wins together."Â Â Â
Siena and Syracuse went back and forth in the first quarter, but a Briana Day free throw put Syracuse ahead, 16-15, at the 1:13 mark for the first time since the opening 3-point basket by Isabella Slim. The Saints answered and the quarter ended knotted up at 20-20. A big second quarter helped the Orange build their lead. Syracuse held Siena to just nine points, while scoring 29 points in the frame. The Orange maintained their lead in the second half with 26 and 27-point quarters.
The win was a balanced effort with eight different Orange players scoring in the contest. The starting five all had double figures and scored 83 of the team's 102 points. Dating back to last season, Syracuse is now 14-0 when four or more players score in double digits.Â
Syracuse held up its reputation as a pressing team, forcing Siena to turn the ball over 33 times. Syracuse has surpassed last season's average of 23.87 turnovers forced per game, which was the second-highest in the nation, in both games this season.Â
The 102 points scored was the first time Syracuse has crossed the century mark in a game since Nov. 20, 2013 against Maryland Eastern Shore, when they won, 113-42.Â
Brittney Sykes finished with 18 points and moved into 13th place on the Syracuse all-time scoring list with 1,243 career points. The redshirt senior also finished with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.Â
Alexis Peterson was tied as the team's leading scorer with 19 points. Peterson has now scored in double figues in 22 straight contests. The senior posted her second double-double with 10 assists on the night. Â
Isabella Slim had her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and a career-high six steals. Sophomore Jade Phillips had a career-high 10 points with two 3-pointers. Gabby Cooper added 11 points and Briana Day finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.Â
The Orange will play on the road for the next two weeks with games at Stony Brook (Nov. 18), at Drexel (Nov. 21) and the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.Â
