Syracuse loses at Drexel, 62-61
PHILADELPHIA – The No. 11/14 Syracuse women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2016-17 season on Monday night, a 62-61 defeat at Drexel. It marks Syracuse's first loss in regular-season action since Jan. 25, 2016.
"We had a good lead and just didn't close the game," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "We missed a couple of free throws. We made some mistakes."
Drexel senior guard Meghan Creighton sank a 3-point field goal with nine seconds remaining to put Drexel (3-1) ahead for good. Senior guard Alexis Peterson pulled up with one second left in regulation, but her shot fell short.
Coming into Monday's contest, Syracuse (3-1) led the nation in turnovers forced, averaging 36.67 turnovers forced per game. The Orange only notched 13 takeaways on the night and turned the ball over 17 times.
Redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes scored a season-high 21 points against the Dragons. Sykes has scored 1,283 points in her collegiate career, which ranks 12th in program history.
Peterson recorded 14 points and a team-high five assists on the night. The Columbus, Ohio native has 1,284 career points, one shy of matching of Beth Record for 10th place on the Syracuse all-time scoring list.
