Senior tight end holds two undergraduate degrees from Syracuse University
AUSTIN, Texas – Cameron MacPherson continues to epitomize what it means to be a student-athlete at Syracuse University – excelling on the field and in the classroom.
The senior tight end was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® First Team on Thursday, Dec. 1. MacPherson is the 11th Orange football student-athlete to earn first-team Academic All-America® honors, and his award represents the program's 12th first-team Academic All-America® nod.
MacPherson joins 23 other student-athletes on this year's Division I football first team, including 2016 Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year Christian McCaffrey of Stanford.
A William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist as the nation's top football student-athlete, MacPherson made five receptions for 34 yards in 2016 and contributed on multiple special teams units. He holds undergraduate degrees from Syracuse in international relations and television, radio and film, and he is currently pursuing a master's degree in Pan African studies. In addition, MacPherson has been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) every semester he's been at Syracuse since transferring from Georgetown in 2014. A two-time ACC Honor Roll selection, MacPherson was a 2015-16 Syracuse University Remembrance Scholar and the team's 2016 nominee for the ACC's Jim Tatum Award, presented to the top senior football student-athlete in the conference.
MacPherson's community service work includes serving as the co-coordinator of youth programming for Hopeprint, a refugee, resettlement and urban development non-profit organization in Syracuse. He is also a volunteer for the "Writing Our Lives" creative literacy program, and serves in a leadership role for the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes. In 2016, MacPherson helped organize the group's "Lift for Life" which raised nearly $20,000 to help fight rare diseases.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® honors, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, achieve sophomore standing at their current school, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3 and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
