SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Â The Syracuse women's tennis team reached new heights on Tuesday afternoon, earning a spot in the ITA Tennis Top 25 for the first time in program history by ranking No. 24 overall.Â
Syracuse (8-1, 2-1 ACC) is coming off a pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference win over No. 30 Notre Dame. With the win, the Orange jumped up nine spots from No. 33 to No. 24, marking the highest rank Syracuse has received in program history.
"Our team has made a lot of great memories and had a lot of firsts so far this year. These young ladies are dedicated and driven to continue to improve in everything that they do," head coach Younes Limam said. "They have pulled together and shown their toughness on the court against every team we've faced."
In the win over the Fighting Irish, graduate student No. 42 Anna Shkudun closed out a big three-set victory over No. 41 Quinn Gleason to seal it for Syracuse. The victory over No. 30 Notre Dame was Syracuse's highest win against a ranked opponent since 2011 when the team defeated No. 25 Yale. The win improved Shkudun's overall singles record this season to 7-2.
On the season, freshman Dina Hegab is still perfect in singles play, picking up her eighth consecutive victory over the season. Classmate Gabriela Knutson lost her first match of the season on Sunday, but is still 7-1 in singles play. Knutson and junior Valeria Salazar are 4-0 on the season in doubles.Â
Freshman Maria Tritou won in two straight sets over Notre Dame, improving her overall record to 6-2. The Syracuse newcomers are a combined 25-9 this season in singles play.
The Orange will be on the road for their next four matches, starting this Saturday when the squad battles No. 6 Duke at 3 p.m. The team will then take on No. 55 North Carolina State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
