Women's Rowing Claims O'Leary Cup at Clemson

Took home the O'Leary Cup for the first time since 2001
CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 19 Syracuse University women's rowing team completed its stay on Lake Hartwell on Sunday morning with the third and final session of the Clemson Invite. It was a successful weekend for Syracuse, claiming the O'Leary Cup for the first time since 2001 and registering the top time in the first varsity four competition.
"We felt like we had a strong team," head coach Justin Moore said. "We feel like it is not about just one boat. We feel like the strength of our team was displayed this weekend."
The Orange started the weekend off with a bang in their two sessions on Saturday. In the team's first race of the event, Syracuse defeated Harvard in the first varsity eight competition. With the win, the Orange took home the O'Leary Cup for the first time since 2001 and only the second time in program history.
In Saturday's afternoon session, the first varsity four boat won its heat by covering the 2,000-meter course in 7:18.0. That time would stand as the best of the weekend in the first varsity four competition, beating the likes of No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 8 Texas, No. 13 Indiana, No. 14 Washington State, No. 17 Harvard, and No. 20 Louisville.
"Being able to post the top time in the varsity four on Saturday night showed the quality of our fours," added Moore. "Both the 'A' and 'B' fours had very good weekends."
Syracuse wrapped up its stay in Clemson with four third-place finishes and a runner-up showing in the third varsity eight competition on Sunday morning. The first varsity eight crew had the sixth-fastest time of Sunday's morning session, its best showing of the weekend, as well.
"We came out this morning and competed very well," said Moore. "I was really proud of the team for the way they raced, especially the varsity eight for their grittiness. That was great."
"Our third varsity eight, they are young and there is a lot of inexperienced women in that boat," concluded Moore. "What was neat was to watch them progress throughout the week and put together their best race of the season against Virginia this morning. They raced great and learned a lot. That is important to us because right now half of our varsity eight came out of last year's third varsity eight."
The Orange will compete in their final race of the regular season next weekend when they take on No. 4 Ohio State and Michigan State in Columbus, Ohio. Racing is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
