Freshman guard Malachi Richardson intends to enter his name into the NBA Draft but will not sign with an agent, according to Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim.
"With the new rules, it's an opportunity for Malachi to get a better understanding of where he would be in the draft," said Boeheim.
Richardson started all 37 games during his freshman year and played an important part in Syracuse's march to the NCAA Final Four. The Orange were 23-14 overall and lost in the NCAA semifinals to North Carolina.Â
He averaged 13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 34.4 minutes played per game. Richardson finished the year with 79 3-pointers, the third-best total by a freshman at Syracuse. He earned a spot on the ACC coaches' and ACSMA All-Freshman team.
Richardson had a career-high 23 points and six 3-pointers to help the Orange upset Virginia in the NCAA "Elite Eight," 68-62.Â
This year's NBA Draft combine will be conducted in Chicago, May 11-15. Student-athletes can enter their name in the draft prior to April 24 and then will have until May 25 to withdraw their names, as long as they have not signed with an agent. The new rules also permit a student-athlete to participate in one tryout per NBA team prior to May 25.
