Sykes ranks 15th in program history in career points scored
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes of the Syracuse University women's basketball program will return for her fifth season of eligibility in 2016-17.
"I am excited for what the future holds," said Sykes. "I am already working on getting stronger for the 2016-17 season."
Following two season-ending injuries in 10 months, Sykes missed all but three games during the 2014-15 campaign and was granted a medical redshirt. The Newark, N.J. native has already earned her bachelor's degree in communication and rhetorical studies and will continue to pursue her master's degree in instructional design, development, and evaluation.
With the return of Sykes, Syracuse enters the 2016-17 season with one of the top scorers in the history of the program. She has scored 1,214 points in 105 games played in her collegiate career. Sykes currently ranks 15th on the Orange's all-time scoring list.
After her two injuries, Sykes made her emphatic return to the court in 2015-16, helping the team to its first appearance in the national final. The guard averaged 10.3 points per game, which ranked third on the squad for the season. She also pulled down 5.1 rebounds per contest, which also ranked third on the club.
Sykes stepped up her play as the Orange entered the postseason. In the team's six NCAA Tournament contests played, Sykes averaged 15.3 points per game, including a season-best 24 points against Albany in the second round on March 20. For her efforts, she was named to the 2016 NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team.
Syracuse is primed for another stellar season in 2016-17. Despite the departure of Brianna Butler, Cornelia Fondren, Taylor Ford, and Maggie Morrison, the Orange return a solid foundation following their first trip to the national championship game. The club returns three of its top four scorers in junior guard Alexis Peterson, Sykes, and junior center Briana Day.
