SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head men's soccer coach Ian McIntyre has announced that 10 newcomers will join the program this fall. The group includes two transfers from four-year institutions, one junior college transfer and seven freshmen.
Â
"A recruiting class is ultimately judged based upon its overall impact on a team during its time on campus," McIntyre said. "We feel that this talented group can leave both their individual and collective mark on our SU program. It is a terrific group of young men, who are extremely excited to represent Syracuse University and help us continue to move our team forward."
Â
Hampus Bergdahl (Asarum, Sweden/Furulundskola) is an experienced defensive player who captained the Asarums IF youth team in the Swedish Premier U19 and U21 Leagues. Bergdahl also played for the Mjallby AIF Superettan team and was a member of the Swedish National Team for the 1995 age group.
Â
"Hampus brings athleticism and a physical presence to our team," McIntyre said. "He has the technique and the tactical maturity to play multiple positions for us in the fall. It was great to have the chance to work with Hampus this past spring and he has already established himself as an important personality in our locker room."
Â
Mo Adams (Nottingham, England/Djanogly City Academy) is a strong central midfielder who played for Derby County FC U18 team and scored 15 goals. Prior to making the move to Derby County, he competed for his hometown team, Nottingham Forest FC Academy. Â
Â
"Mo is an athletic, modern-day central midfielder, providing a valuable link between the front line and the defense," McIntyre said. "He is a physical, aggressive player who will bring a tremendous amount of personality and quality to our group. I am looking forward to seeing Mo in a SU shirt this fall."
Â
Jan Breitenmoser (Wil, Switzerland/Bluefield College) transfers to Syracuse from Bluefield College (NAIA), where he started all 19 games and registered two goals and five assists last fall. A member of the FC St. Gallen U21 team prior to arriving in the United States, he was a member of the Swiss U16 National Team and has three years of eligibility remaining.
Â
"Jan is an experienced player who possesses the ability to play several different roles for us," McIntyre said. "He has a terrific left foot and is an excellent, composed passer of the ball. He will provide our team with some additional balance and I hope that he can quickly transition to life in the ACC."
Â
Sergio Camargo (Cucata, Columbia/Coastal Carolina) scored 19 goals and registered 15 assists during his three years at Coastal Carolina University. The attacking midfielder was named second-team All-Big South in 2015 and captained the K-W United team that won the 2015 PDL National Championship. Camargo was a member of the Canadian U17 World Cup Team that competed in Mexico in 2012 alongside new SU teammate Chris Nanco.
Â
"Sergio is an exciting player who will fit in very well to the style of play of our team," McIntyre said. "He has been an important part of a very good Coastal Carolina program and he will be able to provide us something a little different in the final third."
Â
Kyle Gurrieri (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) captains the USSDA NJSA team and is rated the No. 31 recruit by Collegesoccernews and the No. 46 recruit by Top Drawer Soccer. A former member of the US National Team Residency program in Bradenton, Fla., he represented the US U17 National Team on multiple occasions.
Â
"Kyle is a calm, controlled player who possesses a tremendous passing range," McIntyre said. "He knows when to maintain possession and when to probe and stretch the opponent. We are all very excited to have the chance to work with Kyle and he is a young man with a real passion for the game and a true appetite to continue to evolve his game."
Â
Jake Leahy (Brick, N.J./The Peddie School) has played every minute for Peddie during the past three years and was recognized as an All-Mid-Atlantic First Team honoree in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Leahy plays for Match Fit Academy and has trained with both Everton and Swansea City academies.
Â
"We are thrilled to be able to add Jake to our GK group," McIntyre said. "Jake came through our camp program, working with Coach Masalin, and he has all the tools to be an elite goalkeeper. He has terrific feet, is an excellent shot stopper, and has a wonderful calmness and presence for a keeper of his age."
Â
Khedive McIntosh (Jackson, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) started 56 games for Lawrenceville and captained the 2015 team on his way to earning All Mid-Atlantic First Team honors. McIntosh plays for Match Fit Academy and has starred for both the New Jersey and Massachusetts Olympic Development Teams.
Â
"Khedive is a player who excelled within our SU ID program and he has the athleticism and technique to contribute here at Syracuse," McIntyre said. "I feel that Khedive's best years are ahead of him and he has the drive, application and quality to be successful here at Syracuse."
Â
Johannes Pieles (Langenbach, Germany/J.C.F GutsMuths Sportgymnasium Jena) has represented Carl Zeiss Jena in the Regionalliga. He has established himself as a goal scoring threat at each level and has been a member of the All-Star State team since 2008. Â
Â
"Johannes has a proven goal-scoring record and has the ability to score a variety of different goals," McIntyre said. "He can provide an outlet option for our team, but he also possesses a directness to his game. He is a physical, hard-working player, who has been tested in a tough German Regionalliga. We feel that Johannes really complements the other attacking players that we have in our team."
Â
John Austin Ricks (Diablo, Calif./Monte Vista High School) is the captain of the USSDA San Jose Earthquakes U18 team and has started every game at either midfield or center back. In 2015 he was a member of the San Jose Earthquakes team that won a bronze medal in the USSDA National Championship.
"John Austin is a smart, technical player that we have admired for a long time," McIntyre said. "We believe that he has a very high ceiling and the tools to make a successful transition into our team. I love his passing range, his ability to connect positive passes and he is a player who can play a couple of different positions for us here at SU."
Kalifa Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe Community College) transfers to Syracuse from Monroe Community College after establishing himself as one of the Mustangs' top point scorers in program history. Sylla was an integral part of a Monroe team that finished the 2015 season with an 11-2-1 record and competed in the 2014 national championship game.
Â
"Kalifa brings an athleticism, energy and power to our team," McIntyre said. "With the graduation of Noah Rhynhart and Korab Syla, we feel that we have found an ideal replacement. Kalifa possesses an exciting, unpredictability in the final third."
Â
The group joins a Syracuse team that produced the most successful season in program history in 2015. The Orange won 16 games, which was just one shy of the school record. Syracuse claimed its first ACC Championship and earned a program-best No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange made its first appearance in the Elite Eight, where they defeated Boston College, 1-0, to advance to the College Cup for the first time in school history.
