NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Syracuse redshirt senior center Jason Emerich is a nominee for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. He was one of 165 nominees released by the American Football Coaches Association on Wednesday, July 13.
This year marks the 25 anniversary of the award, which was established in 1992. Since its inception, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has recognized college football players from across the country who exemplify a superior commitment to community service and volunteerism. The select group of student-athletes nominated for this award by their respective colleges and universities are able to balance academics and athletics while remaining committed to helping others and bettering their communities.
Emerich is president of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes, which is a nonprofit organization made up of a national network of chapters dedicated to inspiring the rare disease community through the power of sport. In his role as president, Emerich organized the 2015 "Lift for Life," which raised more than $11,000 for rare disease research. He is also currently coordinating this year's "Lift for Life" event, which will be held Wednesday, July 20 at Manley Field House.
In addition to his work with Uplifting Athletes, Emerich is a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll selection and was voted to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Football Team. Emerich has been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) six times during his career and he will represent the Orange at next week's ACC Kickoff media event in Charlotte, N.C.
On the field, Emerich has started 12 games at center for the Orange, including 10 last season. As one of the top centers in the country, he was recently named to the 2016 Rimington Trophy Watch List.
In honor of the 25th anniversary, Allstate and the AFCA will add three additional spots to this year's team and announce a final roster of 25 members in September. For the first time in the award's history, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® will be comprised of 12 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, 12 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, and an honorary head coach.
Once the team members are announced, fans are encouraged to visit the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® website on ESPN.com, featuring profiles and images of the players, for the opportunity to vote for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Captain.
Since 2000, four Orange players have been selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, including 2014 honoree Sam Rodgers.
