7/25/2016 1:46:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Major League Lacrosse will host the league's first alumni game featuring former greats and a host of Syracuse alums.
The Orange are the most well represented school on the list, which features 10 'Cuse representatives of the 40 players set to participate in the game. The contest will take place on Friday, August 5 in Lake Placid, N.Y. as part of the Lake Placid Summit Classic Tournament. The event is free to the public and will begin at 6 p.m.
The 10 Orange alums are split up on both teams, with Solomon Bliss, Gary Gait and Regy Thorpe suiting up for Team Lead the Way and Ric Beardsley, Tim Byrnes, Kevin Dougherty, John Glatzel, Dan Hardy, Mike Leveille and Pat McCabe playing for Team HEADstrong.
For Team Lead the Way:
Bliss was a two-time All-American and one of just 25 players to be a two-time team captain for the Orange. Bliss played through the entire 2002 NCAA Championship game after suffering an ACL tear in the semifinal matchup and still managed to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
Gait, widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of lacrosse, won three NCAA Championships at SU and pioneered the legend of the No. 22. He's the all-time leading scorer in college lacrosse among players who spent their entire career as a midfielder, recording 253 career points and 192 goals – which is an Orange record. He now is one of the top coaches in lacrosse, leading the Syracuse women's program to Championship Weekend in five-straight seasons.
Thorpe who has also transformed the SU women's program with Gait to reach national prominence, was a two-year starter for SU, after winning NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year honors at Herkimer Community College in 1991. Thorpe was a key contributor on the 1992 squad that reached the national title game, but headlined an Orange defense a year later that claimed its fifth NCAA Championship. Thorpe earned All-America accolades following the season.
For Team HEADstrong:
Beardsley is one of 13 players in Orange history to be a four-time All-American, including two selections to the first team. He was on both the 1993 and 1995 NCAA Championship team and was the team captain on the '95 squad.
Byrnes suited up in Orange from 1997-2000 and was a captain on the '00 NCAA Championship squad. Byrnes scored the game-clinching goal in a 14-12 victory over Johns Hopkins that sent the Orange to the 2000 title game.
Dougherty only played one season at SU, but made the most of it, leading Syracuse to the 2004 NCAA Championship after transferring in from Hofstra for his final year of eligibility. He started all-17 games, scoring 21 goals and recording 11 assists for the Orange.
Glatzel was a two-time All-American and three-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection while donning the Orange. He won the William Schmeisser Award as the nation's most outstanding defenseman in his senior year after being a two-time finalist previously. One-of-25 two-time team captains in the 100-year history of Syracuse men's lacrosse, Glatzel led the Orange to a pair of NCAA Championships in 2000 and 2002.
Hardy, another three-time All-American was a two-time NCAA Champion and a member of the NCAA All-Tournament Team in '08 after recording 13 points in four games of the NCAA Championship. He started all-18 games from the SU midfield as a senior in '09 and was the third-leading scorer with 43 points on 25 goals.
Leveille was the Tewaaraton Award winner in 2008 and started all-59 games of his career on the SU attack. He was a four-time All-American, including garnering first team honors as a senior while leading the Orange to the 2008 NCAA Championship, the school's 10th. He was also the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner for men's lacrosse in 2008, which is given to the nation's most outstanding student-athlete in each sport.
McCabe, a 2006 inductee into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, was four-time All-American at Syracuse, including a three-time first team honoree. A lockdown defender, he helped the Orange to three-straight NCAA Championships from 1988-90.
