Syracuse to Start Season Ranked 2nd in NFHCA Poll

For the fourth-straight season, and fifth time in the last-six years the Syracuse field hockey team will enter the season ranked in the top-five of the Penn Monto NFHCA Collegiate National Coaches  poll.
The Orange will start the year ranked No. 2 in the poll and received 25 of the 48 first-place votes. It's the highest preseason rank in program history for the Orange, topping the No. 3 rank in 2009. Syracuse was ranked No. 4 to start last season before posting a 21-1 record en route to winning the program's first NCAA Championship.
North Carolina ranks first with 915 points and 16 first place votes, followed by Syracuse's 898 points. UConn (818 points/three first place votes), Duke (758 points) and Virginia (746 points/two first place votes) round out the top-five.
In addition to North Carolina, Duke and Virginia, Syracuse will also face No. 6 Maryland, No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 8 Boston College, No. 11 Stanford, No. 12 Louisville, No. 13 Liberty, No. 17 Boston College and Penn, Cornell, Temple, Indiana and Hofstra, which all are receiving votes, on its 2016 slate.
This is the 14th-straight poll Syracuse has been ranked in the top-10 dating back to Oct. 7 of 2014 and the Orange has not been ranked outside of the top-four since November 4 of 2014.

Syracuse opens its 2016 campaign on Friday, when the team travels to Philadelphia to square off with Temple, before taking on No. 6 Maryland Sunday. The Orange's first home contest will take place against ACC foe Boston College on Friday, Sept. 9.
