Orange Extra: A Historical Perspective
10/18/2017 1:00:00 PM | Football
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse defeat of No. 2 Clemson last week was one for the Orange record books in a number of ways.
First off, it marked the first time in the program's 128-year history that Syracuse had beaten a team ranked second in the Associated Press poll. The triumph represented the third time Syracuse defeated the defending national champion. Syracuse beat Penn State in 1987 and Michigan in 1998, when both opponents were coming off title-winning campaigns.
Previously, the Orange's most recent victory against a top-10 foe came in 2002 when Syracuse bettered No. 8 Virginia Tech 50-42. Syracuse now has 13 wins versus top-10 teams in its history.
Syracuse has the potential to make program history again when it plays at No. 8 Miami on Saturday, Oct. 21. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN. The Orange have never won back-to-back pairings with top-10 opponents.
The last time an unranked FBS school won games against top-10 opponents in back-to-back weeks was in 2003 when Auburn pulled off the rare feat. Behind Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams, the Tigers disposed of No. 7 Tennessee and No. 7 Arkansas in consecutive games. The complete list is below:
1959 - Illinois (#7 Wisconsin, #8 Northwestern)
1963 - Michigan State (#9 Northwestern, #8 Wisconsin)
1964 - Kentucky (#1 Ole Miss, #7 Auburn)
1968 - Oklahoma (#3 Kansas, #6 Missouri)
1972 - Missouri (#8 Notre Dame, #7 Colorado)
2003 - Auburn (#7 Tennessee, #7 Arkansas)
THE EYE OF A HURRICANE
No. 8 Miami owns an unblemished 5-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in the ACC heading into Saturday's game.
In addition to being ACC members, the Orange and Miami were also league rivals in the BIG EAST Conference. The last time the two programs met, in 2003, both programs were still in the BIG EAST. After that season, the Hurricanes joined the ACC. Syracuse followed suit in 2013.
Miami leads the overall series, 15-7. Syracuse won the first two contests and four of the first five. The second game in the series was a 15-14 Orange triumph in the 1961 Liberty Bowl.
Syracuse's most recent success against Miami came in 1998. Let by senior quarterback Donovan McNabb, the Orange won in the Dome, 66-13.
Saturday will represent the fifth straight meeting between Syracuse and Miami that the Hurricanes have been nationally-ranked.
DUNGEY 2016 VS. DUNGEY 2017
Quarterback Eric Dungey is putting up numbers very similar to what he accomplished a season ago. Dungey saw action in nine games in 2016. His season ended when he suffered an injury at Clemson.
Last fall, Dungey completed 230-of-355 passes for 2,679 yards and 15 touchdowns. After seven games this season, he is 188-of-298 for 2,080 yards and 12 touchdowns. His interceptions are down from 7 to 4.
His rushing yards are up – from 355 to 386 – as are his rushing touchdowns (6 to 8). Dungey carried the ball 125 times in 2016 and has 101 rushing attempts in 2017.
He enters the Miami game ranked in the following Syracuse career categories: passing attempts (5th, 824), passing completions (4th, 523), yards (4th, 6,057) and touchdowns (5th, 38).
