Sand Matches Career-High In Setback To Georgia Tech
10/20/2017 10:02:00 PM | Volleyball
ATLANTA, Ga. – Belle Sand tied her career-high of 26 digs and the Syracuse women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (26-22, 23-25, 22-25, 16-25) setback at Georgia Tech Friday night in an ACC Matchup. Sand previously recorded 26 digs in a match against Notre Dame on Oct. 4, 2015.
Anastasiya Gorelina produced a team-high 15 kills with seven digs for the Orange (14-8, 6-3 ACC). Jalissa Trotter and Dana Valelly combined for 47 assists.
Gabriela Stavnetchei powered the Yellow Jacket (9-11, 4-5 ACC) attack with a match-high 28 kills. Courtney Felinski added a match-leading 53 assists and Rebecca Martin produced a team-high 17 digs.
How It Was Decided
'Cuse trailed 24-23 in the first set, but used a Gorelina kill and two Georgia Tech errors to win, 26-24.
With set two tied at 20, the Yellow Jackets used a 5-3 scoring run to pull away in a 25-23 triumph.
A Mariia Levanova kill tied set three up at 10, but GT followed with a 4-0 scoring run to regain the advantage. Georgia Tech never trailed during the remainder of the set and won 25-22.
The Orange trailed 20-13 in the fourth set and used a 3-0 run to force a Yellow Jacket timeout. GT scored the final four points of the set and came away with a 25-16 triumph.
Coach's Thoughts
"We started off the match pretty well and stuck to our game plan," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "Our back row was set up well and we did a good job with our blocking game. We lost some of our intensity and momentum as the match went on. Georgia Tech pushed us and it caused some unforced errors on our end."
Of Note
Sand passed Noemie Lefebvre and moved to fourth place in program history with 1,375 career digs. Only Joscie Kaup, Rachel Watson and Andrea Carson have recorded more digs over the course of their careers at Syracuse.
What's Next?
'Cuse travels to Clemson on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. to face the Tigers for the second time this season. The Orange was victorious in three sets the first time around.
