SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (7-8-2, 2-6-1,) faced a 2-0 setback against No. 4 Duke (16-1-0, 9-0-0), Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange honored their seven graduating members prior to the game in recognition of their dedication to the Syracuse women's soccer program.
"I give Duke a ton of credit, they are number four in the country for a reason," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "They are very methodical in what they do but, in the second half, I thought everyone on our team played their part and created some opportunities."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Duke's Kayla McCoy posted a pair of first half goals to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. The Orange rallied in the second half of the game, tallying three shots in the second frame but could not find the back of the net.
OF NOTE
Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan tallied seven saves in the game, just one short of the program record for career saves (331), set by Eliza Bennett-Hattan ('09). With one game remaining, Brosnan has the opportunity to set a new record for career saves in school history
THE SENIOR CLASS
The graduating class for the Orange includes four, four-year starters and the seven members have combined to play in 431 games. They have accumulated 30 goals and 30 assists for 90 total points. Brosnan has totaled 6055:07 minutes in goal for Syracuse, tallying 24 career wins and 18 shutout victories.
"I don't think that you can replace some of these players," said Wheddon. "Courtney is phenomenal and so is Jessica Vigna and the rest of the seniors. With the personalities and abilities of this senior class, it is going to be very difficult to replace them."
UP NEXT
Syracuse closes out the 2017 regular season on the road at Virginia Tech on Thursday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
