WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Syracuse junior goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert recorded a career-high nine saves as the Orange and No. 1/2 Wake Forest played to a 0-0 tie in double overtime in men's soccer action in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Â
Syracuse ends the regular season with a 6-8-3 record, including a 0-6-2 mark in conference play. The Orange are the No. 12 seed in the ACC Tournament and will play at No. 5 seed Clemson in the first round on Wednesday, Nov. 1 in South Carolina.
Â
Hilpert and the Orange defense shut out Wake Forest, which featured the highest-scoring offense in the nation, for the first time this season. In addition, Syracuse also held the nation's leading scorer, Demon Deacons' senior Jon Bakero, to no points on the night. Â The Orange also snapped Wake Forest's 12-game winning streak.
Â
"Wake Forest is a wonderful team, probably the best team in the nation, so to come down here and get a point is a testament to the tremendous amount of hard work  by the team," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We realize we haven't gotten the results we've wanted this year in the conference, but over the last few weeks, I thought we deserved a more than we got. Tonight, it's nice to finally get that point."
Â
Syracuse, which was playing without two starters because of yellow card accumulation, was under pressure throughout the match as Wake Forest outshot the Orange, 22-7. However, the Orange were able to create some quality scoring chances but couldn't get a shot on goal.
Â
Hilpert made three of his nine saves in the second overtime session, including a stop on Bakero's shot in the 109th minute to preserve the shutout. It was his second clean sheet of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts, which give him sole possession of fourth place on Syracuse's career record list.
Â
"It starts up top with Tajon (Buchanan), Adnan (Bakalovic), Johannes (Pieles) and Mamadou (Balde)," McIntyre said. "Our back three, with the help of wings, were outstanding."
Â
Friday's match marked the second team in program history that the Orange faced the No. 1 team in the nation. The first meeting came in 2000 when Syracuse defeated top-ranked Connecticut, 1-0, in Storrs.
