SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three different 'Cuse members totaled at least 10 kills and the Syracuse women's volleyball team defeated Wake Forest, 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18), Friday night at the Women's Building in an ACC contest. The Orange improves to 18-12 and 10-7 in conference play. The Demon Deacons drop to 12-17 and 4-13.
Amber Witherspoon led Syracuse with 13 kills and five blocks. Anastasiya Gorelina and Santita Ebangwese finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Jalissa Trotter produced a match-high 42 assists and Belle Sand tallied a team-high 21 digs.
How It Was Decided
Syracuse used a 10-2 scoring run to open up a 12-4 advantage in the first set. The Orange remained in control and took the set 25-12. Ebangwese and Christina Oyawale each contributed three kills.
The closely contested second set consisted of seven ties. A Wake Forest service error leveled the game at 23, but a Demon Deacon kill paired with an Orange error led to a 25-23 Wake Forest victory.
Ella Saada kicked off the third set with a kill and three straight service aces to open up a 4-0 lead. 'Cuse never trailed and went on to win 25-19. Ebangwese and Witherspoon smashed home four kills and Trotter dished out 11 assists.
With Syracuse clinging to an 11-8 lead in the fourth set, the Orange used a 6-0 run to pull away. Witherspoon recorded a kill, followed by four straight Wake Forest errors, and Kendra Lukacs capped off the run with a kill. The Orange never trailed in the set and notched a 25-18 triumph.
Coach's Thoughts
"We started out the first set really well, knowing what we had to do against this team to be successful," said associate head coach Erin Little. "As a team, we switched off, mentally, in the second set, but we responded well in the third and fourth sets. We were able to come back in those sets and establish early leads and that led to our success."
Of Note
'Cuse completes the season sweep of the Demon Deacons. The Orange are 6-0 all-time against Wake Forest.
