CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Santita Ebangwese posted a match-high 13 kills and the Syracuse women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (23-25, 16-25, 24-26) setback to North Carolina Sunday afternoon in an ACC matchup. The Tar Heels improve to 12-10 and 9-5 in conference play. The Orange drops to 17-10 and 9-5.
Jalissa Trotter posted a match-high 32 assists with 11 digs and six kills for 'Cuse. Belle Sand added a team-high 19 digs.
Taylor Leath led North Carolina with 11 kills. Katharine Esterley produced 7 kills and 8 blocks. Casey Jacobs finished with a match-high 24 digs.
How It Was Decided
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the first set and remained in control. Back-to-back kills from Christina Oyawale and Trotter, a North Carolina attack error and a kill from Anastasiya Gorelina leveled the set at 23, but UNC rallied for the last two points and won 25-23.
North Carolina went on a 6-2 run to take a 12-8 lead in the second set and never looked back. The Tar Heels pulled away and came out with a 25-16 triumph.
Syracuse trailed 24-18 in the third set, but used six unanswered points to tie it up at 24. Ebangwese tallied three kills, Kendra Lukacs added two kills and UNC committed an error during the run. North Carolina answered with two straight points to win 26-24.
Coach's Thoughts
"Today's match was very similar to the NC State match on Friday," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We were unable to pull out the close sets down the stretch."
Of Note
Sand has 1,437 career digs. She ranks fourth in program history and trails Andrea Carson by 23 digs for third place in the Syracuse record book.
What's Next?
The Orange travels to Florida State and Miami on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 12 at 12 p.m., respectively.
