NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Syracuse wide receiver Steve Ishmael was named to the Walter Camp All-America Second Team on Thursday night. The 128th edition of the All-America teams, which are named after the legendary Yale head coach, were released by the Walter Camp Football Foundation at the start of the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
Â
Ishmael is the 16th Syracuse player to earn Walter Camp All-America honors and first since Dwight Freeney (first team) in 2001.
Â
First selected in 1889, the Walter Camp All-America Team is the oldest in the nation. Players were selected in a vote by the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) head coaches and sports information directors.
Â
The accolade is the latest for Ishmael, who posted one of the most productive seasons of any receiver in the country in 2017. An All-ACC First Team selection by both the conference and the Associated Press, Ishmael was named to SB Nation's All-America First Team Tuesday and the All-ECAC First Team earlier today.
Â
Ishmael leads the ACC and ranks among the national leaders in receptions (2nd - 105), receptions per game (t-1st - 8.8), receiving yards (4th - 1,347) and receiving yards per game (4th - 112.3). He also caught seven touchdowns.
Â
Remarkably consistent throughout the year, Ishmael posted a school-record eight 100-yard receiving games and tallied at least 70 yards receiving in 10 out of 12 contests. The Miami, Fla. native had at least 10 receptions in six different games, and his 105 season catches ranks second in ACC history.
Â
The Walter Camp Football Foundation is one of the five All-America selectors used to determine the NCAA's consensus team. The others are the Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Sporting News. Those organizations are scheduled to release their 2017 All-America teams next week.
