
Women's Soccer Signs Eight For 2017

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head women's soccer coach Phil Wheddon has announced eight student-athletes have signed to play their collegiate soccer with the Orange. Shannon Aviza, Clarke Brown, Kailee Coonan, Kate Donovan, Kate Hostage, Laurel Ness, Molly Nethercott and Kenzie Vlachos will join the Orange next fall.
"We are proud and excited to officially welcome our 2017 recruiting class to our Cuse Family," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "The ACC is, day in and day out, the toughest conference in the country so it is critical to bring in players that can compete at this level. We feel that every one of the incoming players will contribute and make us better. We will have depth in every position as well as some great experience. We look forward to working with this class on a full time basis and joining their new teammates in August. It is an exciting time for the Syracuse Soccer Family."
The signing class features players from Massachusetts, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Connecticut.
Shannon Aviza
Hometown: Medway, Mass.
High School: Medway High School
Club Team: Boston Breakers
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Aviza had an impressive career at Medway High School scoring 54 goals and recording 50 assists in her career. As a captain her junior and senior seasons, she led the Mustangs to the Massachusetts Division 3 state finals in 2015 and 2016 after winning the Tri Valley League, Division 3 South Sectional and Division Eastern Massachusetts championships. Aviza earned 2016 Division 3 Eastern Massachusetts Player of the Year honors. At the club level, Aviza played with the Boston Breakers. The Breakers took part in the NPL National Championships and advanced to the National Cup finals in 2015 and 2016.
Clarke Brown
Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.
High School: Redondo Union
Club Team: LA Galaxy South Bay/Beach Futbol
Position: Defender
Brown led Redondo Union to a 15-2-2 record her senior season. She earned All Bay League first team honors in her junior and senior seasons with the Sea Hawks. Brown also played club ball with LA Galaxy South Bay and Beach Futbol. She participated in the U.S. Youth Soccer National League in 2015.
Kailee Coonan
Hometown: Westchester, Pa.
High School: Henderson High School
Club Team: Penn Fusion
Position: Midfielder
Coonan will bring a plethora of experience with her to Syracuse. She participated in the ECNL Player Development Program and US Youth Soccer ODP. She was also invited to the US Soccer U-14 National Team Training Camp in 2013. Coonan showcased her leadership skills as captain of both Henderson High School and Penn Fusion.
Kate Donovan
Hometown: Boxford, Mass.
High School: Brooks School
Club Team: FC Stars
Position: Forward/Midfielder
Donovan took part in the ECNL PDP for three years and advanced to Nationals during her U-16 season. At Brooks School, she was named All-ISL during her freshman, sophomore and senior years. She finished her high school career with 30 goals and eight assists.
Kate Hostage
Hometown: Southborough, Mass.
High School: Algoquin Regional High School
Club Team: Boston Breakers
Position: Forward
Hostage led the East Team to a win in the 2016 High School All-American game. In high school, she and the Tomahawks of Algoquin Regional High School advanced to the State Championship in 2015. With her club team, the Boston Breakers, she played in the State Championship 2012-2016 and played for the NPL National Championship in 2015 and 2016.
Laurel Ness
Hometown: Glen Allen, Va.
High School: Deep Run
Club Team: Richmond United
Position: Midfielder
Ness led Deep Run to the State Semifinals in 2014 and a 5A North runner-up title in 2016. With Richmond United, Ness had a second place finish in the Jefferson Cup during her U-17 season. She also participated in Virginia's ODP camps.
Molly Nethercott
Hometown: Ridgefield, Conn.
High School: Ridgefield High School
Club Team: Connecticut FC
Position: Defender
Nethercott led a Ridgefield defense that allowed the fewest number of goals in the FCIAC LL Conference for three consecutive seasons. Nethercott and the Tigers were CIAC State Championship finalists in 2015 and 2016, where she earned FCIAC Class LL All-Conference honors in 2015 and 2016.
Kenzie Vlachos
Hometown: Kingston, Mass.
High School: East Bridgewater Junior/Senior High School
Club Team: FC Stars of Massachusetts
Position: Forward
Vlachos earned NSCAA High School All-American honors in 2016. She wrapped up her high school career with 124 goals, 74 assists and 198 points, all of which were school records. She led East Bridgewater to a 2016 State Championship and was an All-State selection. At the club level, she and FC Stars advanced to the ECNL National Finals in 2015.
