Franklin Named to Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Orange senior linebacker Zaire Franklin has been named by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation to the 42-player watch list for the 2017 Lott IMPACT Trophy. The award is named after Pro Football Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott and is presented to college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year.

An All-ACC Third Team selection last season and two-year starter at middle linebacker, Franklin in Syracuse's active defensive leader in games started (27), tackles (226), tackles for loss (26), sacks (7) and forced fumbles (4). He was second on the Orange with 101 tackles in 2016 and ranked eighth in the ACC in tackles per game (8.4). He also tied for the team lead with 10 tackles for loss.

Off the field, Franklin is a two-time team captain. He has represented the program twice at ACC Kickoff, the league's annual preseason media event, and he's an active member of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes. Franklin is also a member of Syracuse's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Founded in 2004 by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, The Lott Trophy is the first and only college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player. The Lott Trophy is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

The winner of the 14th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy will be announced at a banquet on Dec. 10 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
