SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Kamal Miller recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 3-0 win against Hartwick on Sunday, Aug. 13 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match was the first of three exhibition games the Orange will play to prepare for the 2017 season.
Â
"It was a solid performance," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We're five day in (to preseason camp), 14 new guys tonight made their debuts – so overall very pleased. It's nice to compete against a quality opponent and stop having to kick ourselves. I think the guys were ready to get out here tonight and I thought for long stretches of the match, we played some good soccer."
Â
The Orange, which are ranked No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, dominated from the start of the game, which featured a 45-minute first half followed by two 30-minute periods. Miller started the scoring in the 31st minute when Syracuse was awarded a penalty kick after freshman Tajon Buchanan
was taken down in the box. Miller converted the PK to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
Â
Miller's play led to the second goal in the second period. His shot was stopped by Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson, but the ball deflected back to sophomore Johannes Pieles, who found the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
The final goal came in the third period when Evan Peters
scored after the ball bounced to him off a Hartwick defender on the right side of the box.
Â
The Orange gave up just four shots, three of which came in the first period. Syracuse recorded 20 shots and seven corner kicks on the night.
Â
The second of the Orange's three scrimmages takes place on Wednesday, Aug. 16 when Syracuse hosts Villanova. Admission at the SU Soccer Stadium is free of charge.
