SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Adnan Bakalovic scored his first career goal 54 seconds into the match to lead No. 8/11 Syracuse to a 3-1 victory against Northwestern. The game at the SU Soccer Stadium was the final match of the Central New York Classic.
Â
"That was Syracuse soccer – those first 30 minutes," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought our intensity was very good, our pressing in the right areas (was good). It was a slick field with all of the rain that we had and we were connecting passes and putting in some dangerous crosses and took our chances."
Â
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The Orange (3-0-1) took the lead for good in the first minute when freshman Tajon Buchanan brought the ball into the box on the right side. He crossed the ball to the far post where Bakalovic fired his shot into the corner of the goal.
Â
Syracuse added to the lead in the 12th minute when junior Jonathan Hagman scored on an assist from Johannes Pieles. Pieles also assisted on the Orange's final goal in the 19th minute. He crossed the ball into the box where Buchanan took the ball in the air and headed it into the back of the net.
Â
Northwestern (1-3-0) scored its only goal on a set piece in the 64th minute. Camden Buescher served the ball into the box on a corner kick and Jake Roberge scored on a header.
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse outshot Northwestern, 11-4, and earned 12 corner kicks to three for the Wildcats. Senior Pat Castle made his first career start in goal, but had to leave in the 40th minute with an injury. Junior Hendrik Hilpert replaced Castle and recorded one save.
