JACKSONVILLE, FL. – Syracuse wrapped up the River City Leadoff with a 5-2 win against tournament co-host Jacksonville. After four innings of scoreless play, junior right fielder Taylor Posner hit a solo home run to put Syracuse ahead in the top of the fifth. In her first at-bat of the season, senior infielder Yamila Evans produced a pinch hit three-run homer, driving in the game-winning runs.
Behind a strong pitching performance from freshman Madison Knight, the Orange limited the Dolphins offense. The Dolphins were held to four hits and four walks over the seven innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both starting pitchers were sharp through the first four innings of the contest. Jacksonville starting pitcher Emma Whitfield held Syracuse hitless for three innings. Knight was impressive in the circle for the Orange, keeping the hosts off the board through five innings.
The scoring began in the fourth inning. In the second pitch of her at-bat, Posner drove the ball past the left field wall, putting Syracuse ahead, 1-0.
After the Dolphins went down in order to end the fifth inning, Syracuse continued to find success at the plate in the top of the sixth. Jude Padilla logged a pinch-hit single, followed by a walk from Knight. With runners on first and second, Evans stepped into the batter's box to pinch hit for catcher Laila Alves. Evans worked the count to 2-2, then hit a three-run home run, putting Syracuse in the driver's seat, 4-0.
Jacksonville would get in on the board in the sixth inning, responding to Evan's three-run shot with RBIs from Lindsey Chadwick and Alison Carter, 4-2. Syracuse would find an insurance run, as Knight drove in Angel Jasso, extending the Orange advantage, 5-2.
Senior pitcher Lindsey Hendrix would relieve Knight, logging a two-inning save. The Orlando, Florida native allowed one hit and no runs in her first career save.
OF NOTE:
Syracuse travels to Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge from Friday, Feb. 17-Sunday Feb. 19. The Orange will take on Iowa and Purdue twice over the weekend.
