RALEIGH, N.C. – Syracuse softball lost both of its contests on the second day of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the opening game, Iowa relied on a strong pitching performance to beat the Orange, 7-0.
In the rematch against Purdue, the Boilermaker bats picked up where they left off, logging 10 hits in a 7-0 win.
Lindsey Hendrix started the first game for the Orange, while Jackie Pengel logged her second career start against Purdue.
Syracuse tallied six hits and did not commit an error across the two games.
GAME ONE VS. IOWA:
Iowa's pitching staff, one of the best in the Big Ten, was effective against the Orange. Freshman Jalen Adams threw a complete game shutout for the Hawkeyes, striking out four and allowing one walk and four hits.
In the top of the first, Iowa took the lead with a pair of hits. Infielder Tory Bennett drove in Nia Carter with a double. Denail Loecker added another two runs for Iowa, opening up a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
The Orange would find an offensive spark in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Kelly Breen slapped a single to right field. Ryan Starr followed the first Orange hit of the game with a groundball single. Syracuse couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, as Carter lined a double to deep left field, producing the fourth run of the game for the Hawkeyes in their half of the fourth, 4-0.
Iowa scored the final runs of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on base, Avery Jackson hit a bases clearing triple, extending the lead, 6-0. The last run was scored off a fielder's choice, 7-0.
Hendrix pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven walks and seven runs. Madison Knight replaced Hendrix in the sixth inning with one out.
Syracuse logged four hits over the seven innings, as Geana Torres and Gabby Lantier made their first starts of the season. Neither team committed an error.
GAME TWO VS. PURDUE:
In a rematch of the ACC/Big Ten opener, Purdue's bats produced two runs to start the game. The first was scored on a fielder's choice, while the second was created from a single from Tyrina Jones.
After Pengel retired the side in order during the second inning, Jones kept hitting in the third, as a single drove in the third run of the game. The scoring continued in the third, as a Purdue single led to two more runs, 5-0.
In the following inning, the Boilermakers logged another two runs. A Kiersen George double produced a run, 6-0. In the next at-bat, Alex Echazarreta drove in George, 7-0.
