
Breen Leads Syracuse Past Iowa In ACC/Big Ten Challenge Finale

RALEIGH, N.C. – Syracuse softball finished the ACC/Big Ten Challenge strong, beating Iowa in a rematch, 11-4. Sophomore infielder Kelly Breen led 'Cuse at the plate, as the Placentia, California native recorded a career-high six runs batted in on one home run and one single.
Madison Knight picked up her third win in the circle, as Jackie Pengel logged three relief innings. Knight also picked up two RBIs at the plate. Olivia Pess and Madelyn Lopez made their first starts of the season.
"It's great to come home with a win," head coach Shannon Doepking said. "We are learning and growing right now. Really proud of the team's response after taking a couple hits this weekend."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After two scoreless innings, the Syracuse offense exploded in the third inning. Rebecca Clyde, Ryan Starr, and Angel Jasso all reached base safely to start the inning, as Knight lined a base hit into right field, brining in the first two runs of the game. With two runners on, Breen cleared the bases with a home run, pushing the Syracuse lead, 5-0.
The scoring would continue in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Â Pess brought home a run with a single, 6-0. The Orange scored their seventh run of the inning with a wild pitch, 7-0.
In the top of the fourth, Iowa responded, scoring two runs. After a single from Grace Banes, Sammy Diaz homered, putting the Hawkeyes on the board, 7-2.
The back-and-forth scoring continued in the Orange half of the fourth. Syracuse tagged on another run. Breen reached safely on an error and was driven home by a single from Tessa Galipeau, 8-2.
Pengel replaced Knight in the circle in fifth inning. Knight finished with one strikeout and allowed two runs and two hits in her four innings.
Iowa added another two runs to open the fifth inning. Nia Carter knocked in a leadoff single, followed by a two-run RBI single from Diaz, 8-4. Breen's big day continued in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, the sophomore second basemen drove all four runners home with a single, 11-4.
OF NOTE:
The Orange are on the road again, traveling to Charleston, S.C. for the Lowcountry Classic from Feb. 24 – Feb. 27. 'Cuse will face tournament host College of Charleston, Robert Morris and Rutgers, with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
